The Songbook Project was founded in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It brings singers from Broadway and cabaret into New York City schools to introduce young people to some of the beautiful melodies and meaningful lyrics of American songs that are part of their heritage. These one-hour programs include not only American standards, but also some of the great new songs being written by composers today. No matter where these young students travel around the world, American songs will no doubt be playing in the background. Through these programs which include a question and answer session, The Songbook Project hopes to be planting the seeds to develop new songwriters, performers, and if nothing else, listeners. This music is their American birthright. –Michael Putman Estwanik, Founder and President, Board of Directors
